At present, the department is supported by a dedicated team of eight permanent faculty members, along with a vibrant community of research scholars and approximately 300 students. It offers a comprehensive range of academic programmes, including Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG), and Doctoral (Ph.D.) studies, ensuring a continuous pathway for higher learning and research in Assamese language and literature.The department maintains a well-equipped library with a rich collection of around 5,000 books and journals, providing essential academic resources for students and researchers. Emphasis is laid on both theoretical and field-based research, particularly in the areas of language, literature, and culture. Special attention is given to Sattriya culture and Madhabdev studies, which form a distinctive focus of the department’s academic identity.
In addition to its core curriculum, the department regularly organizes workshops on Language, creative writing, manuscript reading, film studies and drama, fostering artistic expression and critical thinking among students. A strong mentoring system is in place to guide students academically and personally, while academic tours are arranged to enhance experiential learning. The department also celebrates important state and national occasions, contributing to cultural awareness and civic values. To support students’ future aspirations, special coaching and guidance are provided for competitive examinations such as NET, SLET, TET, and others.
Community Engagement
One of the department’s notable best practices is its gardening initiative, actively involving both students and faculty, promoting environmental awareness and collective responsibility.
